A personal learning home · ATLAS

The problem

A decade of additions made it difficult for retail teams to find the right learning between customers.

The solution

A personal learning home, clearer courses, and an accessible design system that could scale across more than 50 markets.

The impact

+69%

Reported increase in course completion. More than 474,000 people used the experience in its first week.

My role
I led experience design across product strategy, information architecture, onboarding, personalization, and the ATLAS Design System. Research with retail employees and learning partners informed the work.
The central decision
Fix the hierarchy before adding features. Build accessibility and localization into reusable components so clarity can scale.
Project scope
A global learning-platform redesign and design system, alongside exploratory mobile and wearable concepts.

01 / THE LEGACY PROBLEM

Ten years of additions had obscured the starting point.

ATLAS was Apple’s global training platform. Over time, new features and entry points had made it harder for retail employees to find learning between customers and harder for the team to maintain the experience across more than 50 markets.

I ran usability interviews and worked with learning leads to map workflows, information architecture, and accessibility gaps. The opportunity was to simplify the structure people relied on every day.

02 / FROM STRUCTURE TO SYSTEM

Resolve the hierarchy before polishing the screen.

I worked through dashboards, headers, card layouts, and personalization states in sketches and component studies. Progress, points, topics, and achievements needed to support a learning decision without competing for attention.

That work connected the surface to the system underneath it. A consistent set of components could make a new feature easier to design, a new market easier to support, and the everyday experience easier to recognize.

03 / THE LEARNING EXPERIENCE

A personal home and a clearer next step.

The redesigned home brings current priorities, recommendations, and continued learning into a scannable starting point. Discovery and course flows follow the same structure so the next step stays understandable.

Personalization is expressed through useful guidance: what matters now, where someone left off, and what they might learn next. It turns a static catalog into an experience that can respond to the individual.

04 / THE DURABLE WORK

Accessibility and localization belong in the architecture.

The ATLAS Design System extended the work into components, tokens, themes, density options, and iconography. Accessibility and localization shaped those foundations rather than being added at the end.

The same system gave us a basis for exploring new surfaces. The iPhone and Apple Watch concepts examined how useful knowledge and small learning prompts could meet an employee in the moment. These were future concepts, distinct from the desktop redesign.

05 / IMPACT & REFLECTION

More learning. A stronger foundation.

The original project reported more than 474,000 first-week users, a 69% increase in completion compared with the legacy experience, and 121% growth in self-directed learning year over year. The component foundation supported the platform beyond the initial redesign.

Reported outcomes relate to the original platform redesign. Mobile and wearable concepts explore how its principles could extend to other contexts.

WHAT THIS CHANGED ABOUT HOW I DESIGN

I look for decisions that compound. A clearer hierarchy helps today; accessible, localizable components make the next release clearer too. The foundation is part of the experience.
